Although Dave Kaye and Andy Preston were from Middlesex, the group were formed in Birmingham. They secured a residency at the Locarno for about two years and also played at US Air Force bases in Germany. Andy's Clappers were nationally famous for buying a London Transport double decker bus to travel to gigs in, something that was very unusual in the mid 1960s. The group stayed together for the best part of 10 years before breaking up. Some of the members of the group formed Fredz Peeple.

After a band shake-up, which included wanting to play further afield, the line-up changed. Bill Dally left and was replaced by Mick Ronson and Eric Lee, another ex-Aces member, joined as a second vocalist. The group were now a six-piece with the line-up as follows:

Rick Birkett was a guitarist who first found a small amount of success in the Blue Blood Group, who later changed their name to the Accent and recorded a single for the Decca label. Rick was involved in a line up of the Zombies, who began recording an album in 1968. The album was cancelled and the Zombies split up for good. Birkett then rehearsed briefly with the original line-up of Argent before being replaced by Russ Ballard. He later played guitar for Jellybread and Malcolm Tomlinson and also released a solo LP on the Blue Horizon label as Rick Hayward. He recorded a follow up LP which was not released at the time but has since been made available by Sunbeam Records. He was also a session guitarist for Blue Horizon and played with many artists in the studio, such as Eric Clapton, Freddie King, Jack Bruce, Lightnin' Slim and Mitch Mitchell. Rick also found time to be a member of Christine Perfect's band in the late 1960s.
In later life Rick played in the East Anglian rock band The Big Easy and then with Heather Enid Wells in the duo A Little Uneasy.
